Where Is The La Scala Opera House?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Situated in Milan, Italy, The Teatro alla Scala, more popularly known as La Scala, is one of the most famous opera houses in the world. Under the name Nuovo Regio Ducal Teatro alla Scala this theatre was inaugurated with Salieri's L'Europa riconosciuta on August 3, 1778.It is one of the major visitor attractions in Milan. The present edifice is actually the second theatre to be built on the site. The first one, the Teatro Ducale, was destroyed when a fire broke out following a carnival gala on February 25 1776. The new theatre was then constructed on the former site of the church of Santa Maria della Scala. It is from this church that the theatre obtains its name. To erect the theatre the church was first deconsecrated then demolished. It took roughly around two years for Pietro, Pietro Marliani, Nosetti and Antonio and Giuseppe Fe to complete the theater.

There is even a La Scala Museum that houses an extraordinary collection of statues, paintings, drafts, costumes, and other documents that relate to the opera and La Scala's history.
