    Toronto is the capital of the province of Ontario in Canada. It is the largest city in Canada. It is located on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario, which is one of the five Great Lakes of North America. It is the fifth-most populated city in North America. Only Mexico City, New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago have larger populations than Toronto. It has 2, 481, 494 inhabitants according to the 2001 population census. The city of Toronto covers a total area of 629.91 square kilometres. The density of population of Toronto is approximately 3, 939 persons per square kilometre. The city of Toronto was established on March 6, 1834 and amalgamated on January 1, 1998. It experiences an average annual high temperature of 12 degrees Centigrade and an average annual low temperature of two degrees Centigrade. Toronto, on an average, receives only 76 centimetres of precipitation every year.
