Looking for a small/med indoor/outdoor friendly, short coat little shed, trainable lap dog for house with fenced large city yard in South Louisiana, any suggestions ?

I grew up with cocker spaniels. The golden ones to be more secific. My dad hated all the hair but the do shed some when changing coats from summer to winter and winter to summer. They are very trainable and very protective of their owners and environment but not overly aggressive. We had them neutered very young as my dad always said it kept them from becoming too hyper but they still seemed to be very active outside but very mellow when inside.
