The following twelve clubs were part of the original Football League which began it's first season on 8th September 1888: Accrington, Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Burnley, Derby County, Everton, Notts County, Preston North End, Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Football Association had been set up since 1863 as the governing body in charge of the rules of football, however football wasn't made professional until 1885. At this time, some players were given 'illegal' payment to play for clubs, but others were not. The formation of a professional football league was seen as a way to end the corruption within football.

In 1892, the Football League merged with it's rival Football Alliance and a second division was created.
