The control unit and arithmetic logic unit or the ALU are the two main parts of the central processing unit. Both of these parts play a vital role to make the whole processing successful and so are they controlled by the central processing unit. The control unit controls all of the activities of central processing unit. Acting on commands that it retrieves one by one from primary storage; the control unit interprets every command and carries it out. In addition, it controls input and output devices and transfers data between the arithmetic/logic unit and main memory.

The arithmetic logic unit performs arithmetic computations and logical operations. The arithmetic operations include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The logical operations involve comparisons such as less than, greater than, or equal to. Although these may seem like simple operations, the ALU can carry out tremendously complex odd jobs by combining these functions. Both the control unit and the ALU contain registers. They are momentary storage space locations for managing commands and data as they are being processed. For instance, the ALU may momentarily store up the end result of one mathematical computation in a register whilst it performs a subsequent calculation using that result.
