You can search for people on Facebook by clicking on the "Find Friends" link at the bottom of the Facebook homepage. There are also links within that section that allow you to search for friends on your instant messaging contact list. In order to view full search results for people you look for and to add them as friends to your list, you need to sign up with Facebook first.

If you have a facebook, there is a box at the top right where you can just type in the name you are looking for. If the person you look up has many similar friends, they will show up first in the list.
