Which Shakespeare Play Would Be Best For A Beginner?

Answer Question

If you like comedy, probably "A Midsummer Night's Dream" would be a good start. This is a very light-hearted play involving lovers' quarrels, magic and lots of slapstick – in fact it's often the first Shakespeare play shown to children, because the visual and physical humour makes it quite easy to follow. The language is also more varied than in some Shakespeare plays, because there are three groups of characters – the "mortals", the fairies and the "rude mechanicals" or labourers – all of whom have their own ways of speaking and interacting. This helps to get a sense of what's going on. In addition, at the end you get a "play within a play" – a very funny performance put on by the "mechanicals" for the entertainment of the others – so you get two for the price of one.
The only thing to bear in mind is that some of the characters' names are confusingly similar (the two heroines are called Helena and Hermia, for instance) so it's advisable to study the cast list carefully before you see the play.
