Family history is a rather minor risk factor. In very rare cases, it has been observed that genetic changes in the family lead to senile dementia. This is because the mutation of the gene encourages the overproduction of a protein that destroys the nerve cells. These cases progress very quickly as compared to the other cases. Unlike most of the other cases of Alzheimer's (one of the main causes of senile dementia), which set in only after 60 years, these patients are invariably younger, even as young as 30.
One gene (apolipoprotein E) has been identified as a risk-factor gene that creates a form of protein that helps to carry cholesterol in the blood. Although everyone has this gene, some people have a form of it that puts them at risk.
Scientists however do not rule out the possibility that genetics may play a role even in late-onset Alzheimer's, especially if it is combined with other non-genetic factors. There may be more such genes, but as of now they are have not yet been discovered. Senile dementia is generally seen in people over 60 years of age. Women are more susceptible to this disease.
