Probably not, unless your MoT tester is a fully-trained Saab mechanic. It all depends on where the excessive play in the steering occurs.

Thankfully, having to replace the entire steering rack is a relatively rare occurrence. Most replacements are due to a failure to properly pinpoint the problem and taking a buckshot spray approach to solving the fault.

Firstly, find out precisely where the excessive play is happening, it may not be immediately obvious from the MoT failure slip, so speak to the tester. If the excessive play is at one of the wheels, what you need is a new rack arm. Or, to be on the safe side, a pair of rack arms as failure in one usually indicates the other one is on the way out too.

Meanwhile, if the excessive play is at the steering wheel, it's the UV joint that usually needs adjustment.
