Aspen was named for the aspen trees in the region.  Although is started as a mining town, it is now a ski and cultural mecca with activities, shopping and events as well as large, beautiful homes. In addition the area is an outdoor metropolis of year round activities including hiking, skiing, sight seeing, and more.  Here are the 4 best things to do.

Independence Pass – The highest paved road in America.  At 12,095 feet, the views from this pass are extraordinary.  The pass weaves through cliffs, mountains, streams and scenic overlooks.  The pass crosses the Continental Divide and is closed in winter.

Maroon Bells – This is a top must see spot.  It is one of the most photographed mountains in North America.  There are trails around the lake which reflect the three outstanding peaks.  There is no food or water available so pack accordingly.

Aspen Mountain – This ski mountain has seventy-six trails for intermediates and experts.  It is the best ski mountain in town since it ends in town. There are three restaurants and a tavern.

Silver Queen Gondola – For a less active way to see the mountains, take a trip on the gondola.  Sail past forests and see the magnificent view from the top.  The temperature can be much cooler at the top.

Aspen Downtown – Explore the downtown district of Aspen.  There is a wide range of shopping from t-shirt shops to top of the line designer stores.  There are twelve blocks of shops, boutiques, cafes, and more.  There are bronze statues and a water fountain for the children.
