Where Is Iran?

The country of Iran or the Islamic Republic of Iran formerly known as Persia is located in the Middle East, in the south west of Asia. It lies on the northern shores of the strategic Persian Gulf bordered by Pakistan and Afghanistan to the east, Turkmenistan to the north east, the Caspian Sea to the north, Azerbaijan and Armenia to the north west, Turkey and Iraq to the west. It was once bordered by the Former Soviet Union before that system collapsed.

Iran's major cities include Tehran, Qom, Mashad, Isfahan, Shiraz, Yazd, Tabriz to name but a few. The holy city of Mashad in north east Iran is where the golden dome of the shrine of the 8th grandson of the Prophet, Imam Reza (a.s.) shines. It is a place of pilgrimage for Shias the world over for they consider the Imam as one who was chosen by God. Every brick in the dome is solid gold.

With the second largest gas reserves in the world, oil that is being discovered in every province possible, Iran is also known for its culture. Its poetry is written by the great poets Sadi, Hafez, Firdiosi, Rumi etc. The paintings by Iranian artist whether they be miniature, contemporary or classical are renowned the world over as well.
