Templar basically was a member of a religious military order established by the crusaders in Jerusalem in the year 1118, and suppressed in the year 1312. It was better known as the Knights Templar, it was one of the most well known Christian military orders.
It lasted for approximately two centuries during the middle ages, formed after the First Crusade of 1096 to guarantee the safety of the great numbers of European pilgrims who went towards Jerusalem after its capture. The Templar's were a strange organization which comprised of both monks as well as soldiers, which later got them the name "warrior monks" in the Western world.
Member of this organization played a vital role in a number of battles of the Crusaders, and the organization's infrastructure innovated, a number of financial methods which can be counted as the base of contemporary banking.

The Templars were so named because they cut a deal with the Catholic Pope that, in consideration for going on the crusade, they would receive exclusive rights of access to the area where the Jewish temple in Jerusalem had been.
