What Are The Origins Of Stonehenge?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Stonehenge is located near the town of Amesbury in Wiltshire.  It comprises of a large area of earthworks which surround a large number of standing stones.

The dating and positioning of the first stones is placed at between 2,500 BC and 2,000 BC. This makes it one of the most famous prehistoric sites in the world and it was added to the list of World Heritage Sites in 1986

Estimates are that it took almost 3,000 years for the main circle of stones to be placed although evidence suggests activity before and after this period.  Indeed there has been archaeological discoveries made that show early man was in the area from about 8,000 BC.

In those days the vast open area of Salisbury Plain would have been heavily wooded but this would have been cleared with early man farming the lands around the ancient monument.  Now a major tourist attraction for people from all over the world.
