Is Hard Disk A ROM Or RAM?
Is hard disk a ROM or RAM? RAM and ROM come under the category of primary memory without which the comp cannot function. So how important is HD here? And why is HD important even though its a secondary storage device?

Hard disk is a storage device and it doesn't come under ROM or RAM category. You can't relate it with RAM or ROM. RAM memory disappears once you turn off your computer but hard disk memory is permanent. ROM is read only memory and you can't change anything in it.
Hard disk is a re-writable permanent memory. You can write and delete any data from Hard disk. You can randomly access any data from any drive and copy and paste it anywhere else.

Hard disk is not RAM or ROM it is permanent storage media. The example of RAM (random access memory) is ram memory and ROM is bios which are read only memory.

Then you have the use of a hard-drive with SWAP memory space. This space is set aside on a systems hard-drive to aide in adding virtual RAM so that the Operating System will allow programs to dump large amounts of code into memory. This is the reason you will see the hard-drive on a windows machine become very active when processing. This allows the programs to run smoothly consistently. If not for swap space then the program would have to wait aside RAM space becomes free before continuing processing. So yes in the general terms RAM and ROM doesn't equate to Permanent Storage (Hard drive).
