What Does Shiloh Mean?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

The word Shiloh is of Hebrew origin and the meaning of the word is 'His gift'. But there are some scholars who say that the word meant 'he who was sent'. In Bible the word is used as a prophetic name for the Messiah but the word has his fame because it is attributed to the name of some places in the United States of America and one of them was the site of a crucial battle that was fought in the American Civil war.

The word is used as name for a girl and as a boy as well but the word is more famous as a surname rather than the name of a person. But recently it is in news because the celebrity couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt has given their daughter's name as Shiloh.

The word "Shiloh" is the name of a place mentioned in the Bible as Shiloh or Shiloah. It was a village that was located in the centre of Palestine. The Dead Sea was located towards its south east. It was a refuge and a place of rendezvous for the Israelis and the site where they kept the Ark of the Covenant. Today it is the site of a modern town called Khirbet Seilun located in the West Bank. Jerusalem is located to its south west. As the name of a person the name Shiloh is supposed to mean the one who will be sent, which is believed to be alluding to the messiah.

There are over sixty places including cities, counties, towns and villages in the United States that are named Shiloh.
