Karl Heinrich Marx was born in Trier, Germany on 5 May, 1818. He studied law and philosophy at Bonn and Berlin, and worked briefly as a newspaper editor until the paper was banned by the German government.
In 1844 he began to work with fellow philosopher and reformer Friedrich Engels. They produced a number of works together including, most famously, the Communist Manifesto in 1848. For this and other subversive writings Marx was exiled the following year. He came to London, where he remained for the rest of his life.
In 1859 he completed his most important work, Capital (das Kapital) and helped to found the short-lived International Working Men's Association in 1864. He died on 14 March 1883, and was buried in Highgate Cemetery.
