My Cat Has Just Had Her Kittens, What Do I Do Now?
My cat has just had some kittens, what should i do to help them all with the best start of life?
Answers
The mother cat knows what to do, any interference from a human might jeopardize the kittens. Provide food & water in a bowl for the Mommy, she needs to be nourished while nursing.

I was inexperienced when this happen to my cat. I got a very big box. Paper and an old towel. Made her a bed and paid the cat attention. She climbed in and out of the box, knowing the kittens where fine. I put the box in a quiet warm part of the house. When the kittens were feeding I helped the slowest to her mum. Purchased worming tablets and flea stuff from vet to ensure it was safe for kittens. Hope this helps.

Leave the babies alone and let mommy cat do her thing. If u touch them the mother cat will move them.

The best thing to do is not to touch the babies (mommy will get angry and move them) yet and to make sure the mother cat has plenty of food, she knows what to do, don't worry!

Don't be afraid to touch or attend to your kittens. If you have a relationship with the mother cat, like you have had her for a while and she trusts you, she will let you do anything you want with her kittens as long as you keep them close to her while they are still very young. Until they are about 2 weeks old, I handle them just in my hands, never putting them down even for a minute on the bed or floor. I keep them in my hands or they are in with mom. I change the bedding and make everything fresh a couple of times a day. While I am cleaning out there bed, be it a box or cage or whatever, I put a clean towel in a clothes basket and put the mommy and her babies in there. When doing this do not use any blankets, towels or other items that have been washed using any fabric softener. If you need to, just rewash the items that you will use with the kittens. Wash them in hot water and dry them. Then they are fine to use with babies. Keeping their environment clean is very important to having healthy kittens.
Make sure you wash your hands before handling them and DO NOT use any of the hand sanitizers on the market today!!! They contain lots of alcohol in them, they can be deadly to babies of any kind and are dangerous even for children. When friends or family start holding them, ask them to wash their hands too, until they are about 4 weeks old.
I am a breeder and I am in attendance and hands on when each of my mother cats gives birth.
I handle my babies from the moment that they are born or very soon after and never stop handling them until they are 12 + weeks old and go to their new homes.
Granted, this is not the practice of most people. And I would not advise anyone to let children or strangers handle the kittens until they are older, usually I am the only one that touches them until they are about 2 weeks old, family members that the mother cats know can handle them after they are 2 weeks old and by 4 weeks I encourage anyone that comes around to start handling then, but this does make for kittens with great personalities and also teaches them and the mother kitten that you can be trusted and you will never hurt them. Also it makes the kittens a little more attached to you and by doing this your kittens will be much more people oriented and be much friendly kittens as they grow. They will always have a dependency on humans so they do not end up being standoffish or one of those many cats that are just there and not close and cuddly as most pet owners would like.
Always remember that you need to be very careful with them for the first few days and after that, whenever you have them out of their bed, you have total responsibility for these little angels. You can not leave them unattended for even a moment. Handle them with extreme care and gentleness.
Most of all, enjoy them. They grow much too fast and are off on their own so quickly. It is a great experience. I love every minute of it.
Good luck and God Bless,
