The Check Engine Light Came On...my 1999 Dodge Ram Conversion Van. How Serious Is This Likely To Be?

Could be something as small as a loose or bad gas cap, which would turn on a check engine light  because of an uneven fuel/air mixture.
Check the gas cap to make sure it is in good shape, then put it back on, making sure you tighten it until you hear the clicks.
Then, check the fluid levels in radiator, oil and transmission.
After that, "if the light doesn't go off", you can disconnect one of the battery cables for about five minutes, then reconnect it. Sometimes this will reset your computer.
If the light remains on after checking the above mentioned, then take it to an auto parts store such as AutoZone and have it scanned. They probably won't charge you for the scan and will tell you what the trouble codes that come up are for.
Then, go from there.
