How Can I Display My US American Flag?
Answers
There are many different rules and guidelines on properly displaying the American flag. It would depend on a number of factors including where you intend to display the same.
For instance, if you intend to display the American flag over the middle of your street, you would need to suspend the same vertically. The union should be to the north if in an east and west lane. In case of a north and south lane, it should be to the east.
You will find that there are official rules meant for displaying the flag which are noted in the U.S. Code. You can consult your local government information centre for more details. Also on offer are tips regarding the size of flagpole to be used as well as on folding the flag.

Flags should be hung in a prominent place. Make sure that the flag is clean and not torn or tattered. The union should be on the top when it is on the flagpole. First thing to do is to hoist the flag on the peak of the pole and lowering it down to the half-staff. The flag should not be allowed to touch the ground. The flag should not be placed upside down as it signifies an emergency. Paying respect to the flag is very important. If the flag is damaged in any way, it should be disposed off in a dignified manner.

The American flag consists of a dark blue rectangle filled with 50 white stars in one corner. This is often known as 'The Union' as each star represents one of the member states. This sits surrounded by 13 equal stripes of alternating red and white with red stripes at the top and the bottom.
When the flag is hung traditionally, this blue rectangle is in the top left-hand corner of the flag, and the stripes run horizontally. However, when the flag is hung over a street it is proper to have it hanging vertically with the union positioned to the North or East.
The union should always be at the peak of any staff from which it is to be hung, unless it is intentionally at 'half-staff' as a form of respect or mourning. Traditionally, the flag is flown 'upside down' as a distress signal.
