Which Side Won The First European Cup Winners Cup?

The first team to lift the European cup winners cup were Italian side Fiorentina, who beat Glasgow Rangers four one over two legs.

That first final being the first and last occasion the tournament was played with a home and away, two legged final.

After it's creation in nineteen sixty one, the cup winners cup was aways considered the lesser of the three European cup competitions, with the European cup (now Champions League) considerd the most prestigous and the UEFA cup next.

Under the restyling and increased interest in the other two European trophies, the cup winners cup was considered to be surplus to requirements and UEFA decided the nineteen ninety eight, ninety nine season would be the last the tournament was to be held.

Italian side Lazio had the honour of being the last side to lift the trophy, beating Spanish side Real Mallorca two, won at Aston Villa's ground Villa Park.
