Hungary currently has two functioning international airports outside Budapest, the country's capital city. Although Budapest's Ferihegy International Airport handles by far the most passengers arriving in, and departing from Hungary, FlyBalaton and the Debrecen International airports have both underwent significant development over the past several years and now have both scheduled and charter flights to European destinations.
FlyBalaton, also known as Sármellék International Airport, is located near Hungary's Lake Balaton, a major vacation destination in Hungary, especially during the spring, summer and early fall. Fly Balaton has been a civil airport since 1991and boasts a new terminal building, completed in 2006. The airport is currently used by Ryanair, Malév-Hungarian Airlines and Helvetica. Ryanair offers scheduled flights between London and FlyBalaton-Sármellék twice per week.
The Debrecen International Airport, 5km from the eastern Hungarian city of Debrecen (population 204,000) has also undergone significant development over the years. The airport has been open to the public since 2001 and is used by Atlasjet, Malév, Tunisair and the Czech-based Travel Service for charter flights. The airport also had a daily regional flight to Budapest, but this was discontinued in late 2006 as the route failed to turn a profit.
