I Live In San Diego And Found What Looks Like A Baby Gopher Snake. When I Was Holding It By The End Of It's Body It Dropped Its Tail Like A Lizard. Can Snakes Do This?

When this snake crawls it appears to drag the last 1/3 of it's body like it could be a lizard like tail. There are no nubs for legs and it flicks it's tongue like a snake. The under belly is green and it has the same color green stripes that run the length of it's body on it's top side. It is about 4 inches in length. Any ideas? Thank You

It sounds like what you found is actually a legless lizard.  Some refer to this breed as the "glass lizard."  It derives the moniker by being able to drop its tail when threatened by predators causing it to break apart like… glass.
