What Is The Earliest Reference To Stone Tools In Metal Mines In England And Wales?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The earliest docuentary reference for stone tools in metal mines is dated 1747. It mentions the finds at Twll y Mwyn mine in Dyfred(Morris 1747).

However it has been known for much longer than this that stone tools occur in metal mines in England and Wales.
Stone tools were used in mining since mining began. The earliest evidence we have in Britain for these tools is from the Great Orme, Llandudno, Gwynedd.
Recent fieldwork and available documentary evidence has shown that stone tools occur at a large number of mining sites. They are often found in a secondary context in spoil heaps.
They have been catalogued into Class types. for example ClassI, Unmodified, Class 2, Surface-pecked.,Class 3, Edge-notched., Class 4, Partially Grooved and so on. there are 6 class types for these tools.
the distribution of stone mining tools does not appear to relate to  the occurrence of metalliferous ores, they seem to represent a series of regionally restricted groups.
