The kindergarten testing they do in public schools is the first exposure to most children have to IQ testing. What the parents of an exceptional child need to do is to discuss the child with the school counselor after they enter kindergarten. If the child's emotional development is on par with his academics then the child may skip grades and graduate years earlier than they would have otherwise. It may be necessary to have the child put under an "Individual Educational Program" (IEP) so that the parents and school staff meet regularly to ensure that the education received is the most appropriate for that child.
Some private elementary schools offer scholarships for children of exceptional intelligence. Consider contacting some in your area to see if they would like to test this child.

I did have a friend who was tested at a young age, where her parents believed that she was unbelievably gifted, but by the time she got to third grade, the rest of the kids caught up and she didn't look as great. I'm sure that your grandchild could end up being very intelligent, but give him time to thrive.

I want to urge you to let kids be kids please they have plenty of time to be superior later. They need to color on the walls and play in the sand and just have fun. I know we want the best for them but what is so wrong with a 3 year old who is just playing and coloring and can't read War and Peace until High School? It is too long anyway! I wish I had done that for my girls now they are 11 and they are failing school they hate it they started learning stuff too young. It is tough. I now also have a 2 year old and he is just having fun being him it is neat he will get there I still read to him and all but no flash cards and stuff there is time. Thanks for reading.

Children nowadays appear to be so much more intelligent than when we were growing up - and they are. I have noticed that most of the 2 and 3 yr olds that I deal with are much more advanced than the previous generation or our generation.
I went through the same thing with our grandson as I know he is so much more intelligent than others. However, he is one of the many. Thus said, these superior children do need to be exposed to more learning at an earlier age.
