What Are Border Terriers Bred For?
Answers
The Border terrier was originally bred to hunt (generally foxes) along with Border Foxhounds. However, today it is illegal to use Border Terriers to hunt foxes and so they are bred as pets, best suited for active families. Though they are bred for working purposes (they make excellent multi purpose hunters) their ability to adapt makes them the perfect active family companion.
They were also used to help raise sheep. The Border terrier is a working breed and protects a flock with great aggression and spirit. Though they are small in size, they are very brave and will fearlessly chase any vermin and foxes that threaten their flocks. They were used regularly in hunts as they are very fast runners and can keep up with the horse and the hound. They were used to flush out the vermin from their burrows and they would often fearlessly drive home the attack. In addition to this, they are very obedient, are easily trained and possess a keen eye. The Border terrier is a good natured, affectionate, dog that is very active and thus requires regular exercise.
