The M1 carbine was the original light military rifle developed during WWII for soldiers who needed a better sidearm than a .45 pistol but did not require a heavy rifle like the M1 Garand. In the M1 version it fired semi automatically only. The M-2 carbine is the same weapon but modified to fire fully automatically.
