I'm Thinking Of Going To Nursing School But I'm Getting Conflicting Opinions On My Choice. I Would Like To Hear From Other Nurses To See What They Think Of This Career?

My whole career has been in the business world and I would really like to try nursing......I am 41 yrs old and have never worked in the health care field, although it's always been an interest since I was a child. ---- Would this be a good career change? I know there's a shortage of nurses and the pay can be good; but....I'm also worried about the stress on the job, the long hours, etc. I'd appreciate any feedback!!

I am not a nurse, but was in the US Army as a combat medic, which is the civilian equivalent of an EMT and and CNA combined, plus or minus a few procedures we can or cannot perform. I think that nursing is an incredible field. You can choose what kind of medicine you want to practice, anything from helping mothers give birth to working in that same childs pediatric office, you can try geriatrics which was something I tried and had to stop because I get so attached to so many patients.

Nursing is for a strong person with strong constitution generally. It is emotionally taxing, but in my opinion your ability to care is what makes you a great nurse, you have to genuinely love these patients no matter how sad or angry or negative they may be.

The hours are long, but the pay-off is worth it. Financially as a general rule and also emotionally. It is a high stress job with many attachments. If you are wary of making that kind of commitment I do not recommend it, but also there are so many fields.

Do some research and find what interests you. You can try them all as long as you are willing to learn. If you are afraid if getting in there and getting your hands dirty maybe try getting into the healthcare office end, you still get to see what goes on (for the most part) without all of the hands-on experience.

I have been nursing since 1978 and i have found it very rewarding. During training you will come across a variety of nursing specialities which may appeal to you moreso than others. Once your basic training has been completed you can pick which area you would like to work in. Your age is not a problem and in fact your life experience will be of benefit in the caring profession. It can be hard work at times and heartbreaking, but as you move up the ranks and gain experience, you will be better equipped to meet the challenges. Studying will be a bit harder as i presume you have been out of the classroom environment for some time, while the younger students are fresh from school. But once you get into a routine it will become easier. Here again, your maturity will help you. Good luck :)
