What Is An Organism Called That Obtains Energy From Food It Consumes?

Answer Question

In the broader context, any organism that obtains energy from the food it consumes is known as a consumer as opposed to organisms that produce their own energy (producers or autotrophs). Consumers are also known as heterotrophs. Heterotrophs may feed on other heterotrophs (such as carnivores; a lion eating a warthog) or on autotrophs (such as herbivores; a goat feeding on grass in a pasture). Heterotrophs may also be saprophytic. This means they feed on dead organic matter in order to decompose it. Examples of such organisms are many kinds of fungi and bacteria. Consumers that feed on producers are known as primary consumers, those that feed on primary consumers are secondary consumers and those who consume both (omnivores) are known as tertiary consumers.
Some organisms, like corals, can synthesize their own food as well as feed on other organisms (plankton). They are said to have a symbiotic relationship with the autotrophs.
