My long coat Chihuahua is always bringing in leaves or sticks from outside to chew up. I'm sure she's swallowing some of them. Is she suffering from some sort of deficiency that makes her do this? Or am I worried for nothing?

It's perfectly normal... Chewing on/up things is something that is in part a throw back to their wild ancestry, when chewing on sticks and leaves helped to dogs do to strengthen and clean their teeth keeping them in good shape for the hunt. Now a days, it's probably done mainly to fight boredom, and just because they enjoy doing it. It's in a dogs nature to chew and deconstruct... So no worries. Just try make sure that the plants she's choosing aren't poisonous and that the sticks aren't dry enough to splinter too badly. My Papillons love nothing better than to tear a wadded up piece of paper into a million little pieces.. Thoroughly get their stuffed animals... And bring every form of foreign matter from the garden into my bed to shred and gnaw on no matter how many chews and toys they have lying around. It makes a mess, is annoying, and does, on the rare occasion, cause health issues (toxins, splinters, branch wedged across the pallet... Etc.), but it is something that any healthy, active, intelligent dog is prone to do. If it is very worrisome to you but you still want to meet this need of hers, think of her as a two year old kid. You'll need to be attentive, restrict her access to anything you don't want her to have, and provide a rotating smorgasbord of new and varied items for her to keep her mind and teeth occupied.
