It is known that F. & J. Heinz Company was the first company to begin selling tomato ketchup in 1876. The amazing change came during 1972 when Henry J. Heinz for the first time added ketchup along with pickled goods and introduced it at Philadelphia Fair. As the safe use of sodium benzoate as preservative in the preparation of ketchup was challenged by Harvey W. Wiley, H. J. Heinz developed an alternative recipe by eliminating the need for sodium benzoate as preservative; consequently this helped in emerging the modern ketchup. This is true that H. J. Heinz is neither the first one who developed it nor the first one who bottled it, but the formula made by him remained same till today, recognized as standard of excellence.
When F. & J. Heinz launched commercial ketchup, it became very popular to American kitchens. This led the other contemporary manufacturers to get into this ketchup business more enthusiastically and quite obviously, as a result, there came several ketchups in the market in different names like Kutpuck, Catsup, Catchup, Catsip, Cotsup, Kotchup, Cutchpuck. Catsoup, Katshoup, Katsock, Cackchop, Kitsip, Cornchop, Cotpock, Katsup, Kotpock and Kutchpuck. But there were only 3 brands that drew the popularity - Heinz Ketchup, Del Monte Catsup and Hunts Ketchup.
