When Did MTV Start?

MTV started on August 1 1981 in the United States and it was for the first time in the history of television that an entire network was being exclusively dedicated to music. Since then it has come a long way with about 350 million homes in over 140 countries watching MTV at present; making it one of the most watched channel. Along the way it has seen a lot from achieving iconic status among the youth and influencing a whole generation of music creation.

Music with the launch of MTV suddenly became a marketable commodity and music videos started ruling the roost in the entertainment industry with artists like Duran Duran, Michael Jackson and Madonna, to name a few, becoming household names. MTV skyrocketed on the popularity charts resulting in various music channels being launched around the World and giving music a truly Global flavor. Today MTV with its innovative shows does a lot than just play videos; it has now become a fundamental part of the music culture and a way of life for music enthusiasts.
