When Was Coriolanus Wrote?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Uncertain, though the language of Coriolanus puts it close to A and C, Pericles and Timon of Athens, in 1608-9. Allusions within the play to historical fact,ie, the Midlands food riots and "Great Frost" (1607)  seem to support this. As such. It is the last of the tragedies, and perhaps the first of Shakespeare's plays to be written for the Blackfriar's theatre. As with the other Roman plays, Thomas North's, Plutarch's Lives, is the central source , as in the case of Antony and Cleopatra, some passages are lifted verbatim. The 1623 text, (First Folio), provides the sole authoratitive text, probably set from a transcript of Shakespeare's" foul" papers.
