Can A Solar System Fit With A Loft Conversion?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

If you have a roof facing somewhere between south east and south west with a suitable slope which is unshaded for all or a large part of the day then you have the right kind of surface for solar panels. However, the heat from solar panels must be transferred to a cylinder. This is like a normal hot water cylinder but has two coils inside, one for boiler heated water and another for solar heated liquid. The heat from both these sources is transferred to stored water which can flow to your taps. The challenge for loft conversions is the placing of pipes and storage facilities required. Conventional hot water cylinders require a large cold water storage tank which is usually in the roof space. If you don't have one of these but a combi boiler instead, installing solar system is more challenging. The main challenge is visualizing where pipes can go from the panels on your roof to the tank you will need to store your solar heated water. Always consult with your planning department before installing a solar system.
