The phrase true crime, when used in the context of writing, is defined as a genre of non-fiction in which an actual crime and real people are used as a point of departure by the author. An author can either write a fairly factual true crime story or it could be highly speculative, and it is also not uncommon for an author to fictionalize the story to a large extent.

Critics often claim that some writers write true crime books merely to capitalize on the demand for such books in the markets. However, these instant books are produced quickly and are not a result of several years of research and inquiry. Other true crime writers revisit historic crimes, such as the deaths of celebrities and political assassinations, and attempt to propose solutions to the cases.
