    The sum
(1/r1) + (1/r2) + (1/r3) can be expressed as a single fraction by putting each term over a common denominator. That denominator needs to be a common multiple of all of the denominators. Usually the Least Common Multiple is preferred.

Since we don't have numbers to work with, we use the only common multiple we know for sure: (r1)(r2)(r3). We use this to multiply our fraction by 1 = (r1*r2*r3)/(r1*r2*r3).

    (1/r1 + 1/r2 + 1/r3) = (1/r1 + 1/r2 + 1/r3)(r1*r2*r3)/(r1*r2*r3)
     = ((1/r1)*(r1*r2*r3) + (1/r2)(r1*r2*r3) + (1/r3)(r1*r2*r3))/(r1*r2*r3)
     = (r2*r3 + r1*r3 + r1*r2)/(r1*r2*r3)
