Both the Union army and the Confederate army had their own sets of advantages and disadvantages, which contributed to their respective victories and defeats in the myriad battles that they fought against each other. Their dedication towards their purpose never faded a smidgen and each day of the Civil War marked a fresh upsurge in the desire of accomplishment of the mission on both sides. However the Union army had an upper hand over the Confederate soldiers because of some notable reason. The first reason was their strength in terms of numbers and their second strength was their accumulation of war supplies and the backing of a powerful government.

On the other hand, the Confederate army was smaller in number and the dearth of war equipment and supplies did not help matters much for them. Nevertheless because the American Civil War was fought on Confederate territory, the Confederate soldiers had a much better idea about the land than the Union soldiers, a fact, which compensated for the other weak points of the Confederate Army.
