Why Don't Heat-seeker Missiles Lock On To The Jet That Fired It?

Why don't heat-seeker missiles fired from fighter jets simply turn and lock on to the jet that fired it, or other allied jets if they lock onto the nearest heat source?

The seeker head for the guidance system is on the front of the missile. The plane's jet engine is behind the missile (that is the plane carrying the missile). And the pilot makes real certain he has a good solid lock on a target before he pulls the trigger. A lot of other factors come into play but that's the basics of it.

If my answer was incomplete or lacking in any way you have but to ask, I sat in school for almost two years studying nothing but guided missiles compliments of the US government. I have the ability to bore you to death with minutiae.
