    I-pod was launched in October 23, 2001 whereas MP-4 was introduced in the year 1998. Thus MP4 came first.

      An Mp4 player came before an ipod which was introduced by the company apple. An mp4 player can be of any company and these come in various sizes and with different memories. An ipod on the other hand is only produced by the company Apple and is a certified product.
