I'm not really sure if this is normal but you can buy books or check out books from your library on hampsters you can probably even ask a vets office to see if this is normal. Hope you find your answer.

It sounds like an upper respiratory infection. Doe's your hamster also have excess mucus in it's nostrils?
This is not normal and by the time you find a book at the library on veterinary medicine for hamster's it will be too late.
You may notice it's appetite dropping, but will still drink water. You have to get an antibiotic for it right away. They can come as an ointment or liquid. I have used an ampicillin pill and crushed it into a powder and twice daily put a small amount on my kittens tongue and she was cured in three day's. Now I am not recommending that you try this , I am not a Vet., but it worked for me.
I suggest you see a Vet. I talked with one, that is how I came up with my own therapy saving a lot of money in the end.
