What Does The Word "Prodigal" Mean?

    "Prodigal" means extravagant, wasteful.  It is pronounced (PRAWD ih gul).  It is an adjective or a noun.

    Similar words are Profligate, Indulgent, Hedonistic, Dissipated and Lavish, and Squander (verb).

    A Prodigal person is to Wealth
    as a Procrastinor is to Time.

    Some opposite words are Frugal, Penurious, Temperate, Parsimonious, Ascetic, Austere, and Abstemious.

    "The man was a prodigal spender, and he ended up living in a pile of credit card debt and unpaid bills."

    In the Bible, Jesus tells the story of a Prodigal Son.  The Prodigal son takes his inheritance from his father and moves away and goes off and squanders it.  He ends up poor and broke, eating with the pigs and working for another man.  He decides to go back to his father's house.  When he goes back home, instead of punishing him, his father runs out to greet him at the entranceway and has a feast of celebration for him, because his son was "dead" and now his is "alive."
