What Is An Atomic Mass Number?

    Atomic mass number is also known as nucleon number of mass number and it is denoted by "A". It is the sum of the total number of protons and neutrons present in an atom. A mass number is a distinguishing feature of every element and even isotopes of the same element may have different mass number. It is written as a superscript on the left of the element symbol for example, carbon has atomic mass of 12 and it can be written as 6C12.

    Atomic mass number is also related with the atomic number with the following equation:

    N=A−Z

    where, N =  number of neutrons, Z = Atomic number and A = Mass number
