Red roses are associated with Lancashire because the customary emblem of the House of Lancaster is a red rose. The Red Rose of Lancaster is quiet similar to The White Rose of House of York. These are obtained from symbols of the Royal Duchies of Lancaster and York in the 15th century.

Later all this resulted in an out break of civil war which was fought for the throne and it was called the Wars of the Roses. Now a days war of roses has been associated and applied between sports teams which representing Lancashire and Yorkshire. The term war of the roses is also associated and applied to the Roses Tournament where Lancaster takes on the York University every year. Lancaster is a historic city and has a lot to offer for cultural amusement.
