The primary colors are red, yellow and blue. By combining these colors we create secondary colors of orange, green and violet (sometimes called purple) but the true color is violet. Then, by combining the different colors, shades and hues of red, blue, and yellow in larger amounts such more red and less blue we get what is called tertiary colors.

Notice, I have not mentioned white, black or gold above. This is because white is considered to be the absence of all color and black is considered to be the presence of all colors. Gold is not a color but is a combination of hues created by tinting and combining several tertiary colors. In reality gold is a pigment created from other pigment combinations and is not a color.

One company whose website I visited, creates Gold paint by using a shade of magenta, a medium yellow, a combination of blue/green to create gold paint by shading/hues and tinting mixtures. The website is below: boaboblog.blogspot.com

I also found a great website, which gives a lot of information about color and how to make many colors and shades of icing for cakes. This site is packed with information for anyone who wants to let their creative side show, by baking with color. www.baking911.comdecorating/tinting.htm
