With the increase in technological capabilities, children are becoming more and more attracted to technological activities such as the computer. However, this is not necessarily a bad thing, and there are many benefits to be gained.
The first benefit is fine motor skills. Even young children are becoming very adept at using the mouse and this can assist with fine motor development in other areas such as tying shoelaces and holding pencils. It improves hand eye coordination which sets a good grounding for most academic subjects at a later stage, and is a good tool for demonstrating cause and effect.
Computers are an excellent educational aid. There are many fantastic children's programmes that enhance numeracy and literacy skills. They cover a vast range of ages, from toddlers upwards. The provision is excellent and the presentation makes it very attractive to children. This is great if they do not enjoy school or learning.
And finally, the internet can provide a wealth of information. Think of it as an online encyclopaedia. You can control the type of sites that can be accessed and can demonstrate how to use the searches most efficiently. The use of the internet increases knowledge but also the ability to research and extract information.
