If you are looking for an apartment to rent for the short or long-term in Budapest, it is important that you carefully consider the location of the flat. Work, school and budget considerations may play a role in your decision, but there are other factors to consider as well.
Many foreigners living in Budapest prefer to find accommodation in the 2nd and 12th districts. These two districts are located next to each other on the Buda side of the river and are known for having a lot of green space, better air quality and many smaller apartment buildings and private, detached houses. Both of these districts are also relatively close to English-language international schools, such as the American International School of Budapest (AISB) and Greater Grace Christian Academy (GGCA). Rent, however, tends to be most expensive in these two districts and if you are on a one-year contract, you can expect to pay at least 150,000 Forints (approximately $755) for a small, two room apartment.
Living on the Pest side of the river can also be expensive, especially if you choose the upper-class 5th district. However, a more inexpensive solution can be the 13th district, located near the Margaret Bridge and the Danube, where you may find apartments for about 100,000 Forints.
Some people also choose to rent private houses in the suburbs of Budapest, such as Budaörs, Budakeszi or nearby villages like Diósd. You can often find good deals on large, newly-built houses and if you have children, you can send them to the English-language International Christian School of Budapest, located just on the border of Budapest and the neighbouring village of Diósd.
