Angioplasty is a treatment which is suggested as a first line of action for most coronary diseases. This disease may cause chest pain, heart attack or even death. It is a life long problem and smoking, high cholesterol and blood pressure can increase the likelihood of this disease
Now there are various types of treatment options for coronary artery disease such as medicines, Angioplasty and bypass surgery. Our interest is in angioplasty. There are two different types of angioplasty treatments.
Balloon angioplasty- this procedure uses a catheter with a small balloon on it. The balloon is inflated to push apart the plaque in the clogged arteries. This improves the blood flow in the artery. It is very similar to a coronary angiogram. It is very normal to have chest pain when the balloon is inserted. The risk of restenosis (i.e. the artery again narrows down due to growth of plaque) of treated artery is 40 -50%
Stenting- this is a highly recommended procedure. In this a coronary stent is interested in the diseased are to keep the artery open. The stent is paced on a uniquely designed balloon catheter. The balloon is inflated to expand the stent and to flatten the plaque against the artery wall. Once fully expanded the balloon is deflated and removed. The stent stays in permanently.
