What's The Bisexual Population Of The World?

Answer Question

Somewhere between 0.5 and 10% (best guess=about 1%, or ~61 million people), looking at various sources.  That's distinct from people who self-identify as homosexual.

It's really hard to get a reliable figure.  People lie like crazy on this one, as the social stigma in being non-heterosexual is so strong.  Plus, the figures get hotly debated.  Anti-homosexual thinking -- and for those who feel this way, there is little difference between bisexual and homosexual -- is that non-heterosexuality is either a genetic error, character depravity or a symptom of confusion.  And that the incidence is wildly over-estimated, too.

Against that, we know that homosexual and bisexual behaviour is widespread in the animal kingdom, if also under-reported (because of the social stigma we humans attach to it).

Actual surveys usually come up with the result of about 0.5% of respondents self-identify as bisexual.  But these are only the people who are willing to admit to not being straight.  Even allowing for a few confused people, or those that lie because they think it's cool to be bi, we can probably safely assume that the true proportion is a bit higher than 0.5%.

The term bisexuality is defined as the sexual orientation which refers to the aesthetic, romantic or sexual desire for people of either gender or of either sex. It is the B of the abbreviation LGBT, which stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender. There are several newer classifications of bisexuals such as pansexuals, omnisexuals, anthrosexuals, pomosexuals (post-modern sexuality), bi-permissive people, ambisexuals, bi-curious people, trisexuals (also spelt trysexuals), passively-bi (or open-minded) people and actively-bi people.

The total population of bisexuals in the western countries of the world is estimated to be between two to six per cent of the total population of the world. This figure, however, is not accurate as it does not take into account the bisexual population of the world at large. There is also a large population of disputed bisexuals in the world.

Some of the famous bisexual personalities include Marlon Brando (the legendary American film star), pop singers Christina Aguilera and Melanie Brown (also known as Mel B. or Scary Spice, the former member of the Spice Girls), the American actress Drew Barrymore and the English poet Lord Byron, among others.
