The virus that causes glandular fever is passed from one person to another in body fluids, usually saliva. It is common in teenagers and young adults and is spread by kissing. The virus, called the Epstein Barr virus, is extremely contagious and it is also possible to catch it from another infected person by using the same cups, glasses, crockery or knives and forks. The virus can also be passed on by coughing or sneezing.

Many young people catch glandular fever when they are away at college or university. This environment is perfect for the spread of the disease – close, communal living environments and plenty of new relationships forming. Once someone has had the disease, they become completely immune to the virus but can still pass it on to someone who has never had it.

To avoid spreading the disease, personal hygiene and cleanliness is important and drinking vessels and plates etc should be kept separate as far as possible.
