The whole point of sending out party invitations is for the recipient to understand what kind of a party it is. It is a reminder which they can just hang up on their refrigerator or room.
There is a big difference in giving a party invitation through a card and telling a person verbally about a party. People tend to forget about parties if they are told verbally about it and do not take it seriously. Trust me if you are planning a big birthday bash or anything and you make the mistake of telling people verbally, then a lot of people might not take it seriously and tend to forget too. A physical party invitation gives a cool effect, with the text written on it about the details of the party.
If you have to verbally invite people then you will have to make sure you have told invited all the people on your list and some people might not be available so sending out an invitation would be the best way. Although it will cost money, but hey you are already spending money on your party so why be so stingy and avoid the whole invitation part.
Ninety nine percent of people decide to go to a party by just looking at the invitation. If your invitation is cool looking, bright and interesting, people will automatically get attracted and get interested in joining your party, as the visuals have a psychological impact on people.
