Culture is like the lifestyle of society.  Each of us adds to the whole that makes up our society.  Each of us has our own lifestyle, and our lifestyle adds to the whole that makes up our culture.  American culture/society is different than British, Russian, Indian, Japanese, Columbian,...  Not thinking in terms of nationality, but the national history and heritage.  Culture can then be further defined by community.  A community defined by factors like race, religion,...  America, unfortunately, has some clearly defined racial communities.  A neighborhood that is mostly white, black, latino, chinese,...  How many of us think of a ghetto as a black neighborhood?  (*History lesson - Ghetto is the name of a Jewish walled neighborhood)  How many cities have China Towns?  America, India, Japan, Columbia, and Iraq all have different religious heritages that form their different cultures/societys.  It isn't that culture is important, but it is important to recognize that it is there and what it is.
